Why Real Progress Feels Slower in 2025 Than in 2005

The Paradox of More

I have been writing software for over two decades. The machines are faster. The languages are safer. The tooling is richer. And yet, when I sit down to build something, I feel the ceiling more acutely than I did in 2005 — not less. This is not nostalgia. It is a structural condition that deserves examination.

Progress, as measured by benchmarks and release notes, has been real. But progress as experienced by the person doing the work is something different. The two have diverged.

Understanding why requires separating the speed of tooling from the weight of the system surrounding it.

What Abstraction Actually Costs

Every abstraction layer added to shield developers from complexity also adds a layer of indirection between intent and outcome.

In 2005, a developer working with a LAMP stack could hold the entire execution path in their head. The system was shallow. Debugging meant reading code. Deployment meant understanding the machine.

Today, a typical web project sits on top of a runtime, a bundler, a framework, a meta-framework, a cloud provider's abstraction layer, an infrastructure-as-code layer, and a CI/CD system — each maintained by a different team, each with its own release cadence.

The cognitive surface area of even a modest application has grown by an order of magnitude. The abstractions do not eliminate complexity. They relocate it and obscure it.

The Update Treadmill

In 2005, a chosen library stayed chosen. It did not demand re-evaluation every eight weeks.

The maintenance burden of a modern project is not incidental — it is structural. Security advisories, breaking API changes, deprecated patterns, and shifting conventions constitute a permanent background workload that consumes attention which would otherwise go toward building.

This is not the fault of any individual maintainer. It is the emergent behavior of an ecosystem where the incentive is to release, not to stabilize.

The developer absorbs the cost. What reads as acceleration in a changelog is experienced as friction at the keyboard.

Cognitive Overload as a Constant Condition

Cognitive overload is not an event. For many developers working in modern environments, it is the resting state. The number of decisions required before a single line of domain logic can be written — framework choice, state management strategy, rendering model, deployment target, authentication provider, observability stack — is historically unprecedented.

The brain does not distinguish between decisions about infrastructure and decisions about product.

Decision fatigue accumulates uniformly. By the time the interesting problem is reached, a meaningful portion of the available cognitive budget has been spent on scaffolding.

This is the mechanism behind the illusion: the tools handle more, but the developer is left with less capacity, not more.

  • Setup cost is underrepresented — productivity metrics rarely capture the hours spent before the first commit on core functionality.
  • Context switching is compulsory — monitoring dashboards, Slack alerts, dependency bots, and deployment pipelines all interrupt deep work continuously.
  • Optionality is a burden — the proliferation of equivalent tools forces repeated evaluation without proportional benefit.

The Illusion of Acceleration

The dominant narrative is one of exponential progress. AI completes code. Infrastructure provisions itself. Deployment takes seconds.

These claims are true at the surface level, and they are misleading as a complete account. The acceleration applies to the mechanics. It does not apply to the architecture decisions, the debugging sessions that span tool and vendor boundaries, or the cognitive work of maintaining coherent intent across a fragmented system.

What has accelerated is the production of plausible-looking output. What has not accelerated — and may have regressed — is the developer's ability to reason with confidence about what that output will do in production.

Confidence is the actual substrate of productive work. When the environment undermines confidence faster than the tooling builds it, the experienced feeling is constraint, regardless of what the benchmarks show.

What Remains Invariant

Beneath the tooling churn, certain conditions for productive software work remain constant: a clear problem, a manageable surface area, a feedback loop short enough to sustain focus, and enough cognitive slack to reason about consequences.

These conditions were more reliably present in simpler environments, not because the environments were better, but because they were smaller.

The developers who report the highest sense of capability today are, with few exceptions, those who have deliberately narrowed their stack — not those who have adopted the most tools.

Constraint, chosen deliberately, restores the conditions that abstraction accumulates and then destroys.

The lesson is not to reject modern tooling. It is to treat the reduction of surface area as a first-class engineering concern, not an afterthought.
